History
Small Fryz was a team that came together in the summer of 2008 to play in a adult tournament called Spawnfest. Randy Lim was the creator of Small Fryz and it was he that brought the team together. Back then it was just a bunch of kids who wanted to play more ultimate. Over time, it has evolved into a competitive team that practices weekly and enters many tournaments. In 2010, the newly named Fryz (no longer small) started having tryouts for the first time. Having great interest from so many passionate players, we hope to keep adding players for many years to come.
Coaches
In the fall of 2008, Miranda Roth Knowles became the first official Small Fryz coach. She is an accomplished player who has played in 10 USA national championships, coached Junior Worlds teams, is the Director of Coaching of Ultimate Peace which brings ultimate frisbee clinics to children in the Middle East
and has countless other achievements, she has decided to take on the new challenge of playing and coaching in Shanghai, China last August.
In 2009 Ryan "Wink" Winkelmann, joined Miranda to coach. He played for the University of Washington ultimate team, Sundodgers, for three years. After college he joined the Seattle elite mens team, Sockeye, for three years earning him two national championships. Wink will be leaving us this year to start a family.
In 2010, Pauline Lauterbach, joined the coaching staff. Having played on numerous club women's teams including captaining Ambush, Lady Godiva, Fury and Schwa, she has recently been the assistant coach to the Junior National boys team, winning a gold medal in Heilbronn, Germany and this year, 2012, in Dublin, Ireland.
In 2011, Sarah "Surge" Griffith - Hailing from Michigan, Surge played with Flywheel and Mojo before venturing out west to join Riot. Surge is well known for her incredible speed, after winning the infamous “fastest woman” contest at college nationals, 2008. University of Michigan (2004-2008) MOJO (2005-2007) Seattle Riot (2008-present)
Shannon O'Malley - Shannon O’Malley is not only one of the most decorated female Ultimate players in the world, but a poster child for the success of the Seattle youth Ultimate scene and an active part of its continued growth. At the age of 16 Shannon made her first Worlds team, winning a silver medal with the 2004 USA Juniors. The next year she added Washington State and High School National Championships with Nathan Hale High School to her resumè. 2005 brought a Western Championship with Nathan Hale as well as a YCC Championship with the Seattle girls club team. Nathan Hale (2000-2005) D'oh (2000-2004) MoHo (2002-2005) UW Element (2006-2010) Seattle Riot (2005-present)
In 2012, 3 new coaches were added to our team:
Jenn Willson - A northwest native out of Portland, her years of experience playing and captaining nationals-calibre teams such as: Syzygy (1995-1999) BNOGO (2000) Fever (2001-2003) and Seattle Riot (2004-2010)
Deb Cussen Scheibe - Carleton, 1995-1998, Captain, 1996-1998, Seattle Riot, 2000-Present, Captain, 2003-2004, Women on the Verge, Seattle, 1999, International: WUCC 2002, Hawaii, WUCC 1999, Scotland.
Casey MacPhee - member of the 2010 USA Junior World Team team that competed and won the gold in Heilbronn, Germany.
2013: With Wink and Casey leaving us, we added:
Aly Lenon: Sockeye player. One of Sockeye's most positive forces, Aly is lightning quick to block a dump as well as keep the team in a good place mentally. He has become a veteran presence in huddles, and is relied upon to harass and shut down the opponents’ best reset handlers. Offensively Aly embarrasses marks with his unorthodox timing and releases, while throwing and going with the best of them. Keep an eye on #4 at crucial big game moments to see why that high-stall-count huck was thrown. Past teams: NOMS, Dirt, Ego, Voodoo
Sam Harkness: Sockeye player. Sam “Harness” Harkness has stepped up into the captain role this year, and has blown up immediately. Sam’s athleticism is no mystery to the Sockeye but it has now translated into his becoming one of the biggest playmakers in the air, absolutely roofing multiple Furious George players in the Flowerbowl showcase game against Team Canada. Sam’s speed is balanced by his quick disc distribution, and his newly found hucking game. Harkness is expanding his repertoire, much to the dismay of the rest of the nation. Past teams: Nathan Hale, MOHO, Voodoo
Reid Koss: Sockeye player. Few players continue to learn and get better once they’ve reached a top-tier level like Reid. After successfully making Sockeye in 2010, Reid has only continued his rise in both athleticism and game IQ. Everyone has been aware of Koss’ big playmaking ability, but nobody was prepared for his breakthrough performance against the Australian National Team, tallying 6+ D’s, none of which were given to him, combined with multiple goals and assists. Reid is making the case for himself as one of the top defenders in the nation, and we are glad to have him. Past teams: Dirt, Voodoo
2014: With Pauline, Jenn and Deb leaving us we added:
Spencer Wallis: Sockeye player and captain. Unable to obtain government clearance for human tests, Spencer Wallis turned to his own body. The results are seen in hot tubs, at counseling sessions, in the weight room and up 80 degree pitches. With careful, calculated genetic therapy, Spencer built a new breed of human, the Wallis. Flexible, grinding, and exploding are his feats, extraordinarily unnatural. Popping in and out of the frame, Spencer Wallis is science in motion.
Past Teams Disc Jockeys, MoHo, Ego, Rhino, Voodoo
Alyssa Weatherford: Riot Player. Alyssa is known for her unconventional throwing mechanics that keep marks off-balance, utilizing unique release points combined with an uncanny ability to control her throws’ shape, whatever the conditions. Alyssa’s throws open up the field for Riot’s downfield cutters, and were a key difference maker in the windy conditions in Sarasota last year, as she was one of the few who could consistently hit incredibly difficult downwind throws, with touch, in the semifinals against Scandal.
College: Western Washington University
Angelica “Geli” Boyden: Riot Player. With a competitive fire that is unmatched on Riot, “Geli” raises the intensity of the level of play at every practice, scrimmage, and tournament. Geli is capable of making incredible, unexpected plays on both offense (backhand breaks so low they draw errant travel calls) and defense (box-outs of the other teams’ fastest players that usually leave them sprawled out on the ground wondering what just happened), and you can expect to see her making more of these plays as she steps up in the handler ranks during her second year on the team.
College: Pacific Lutheran University
Also coaching are Fryz alumni players:
Khalif El-Salaam: Seattle Rainmaker, Seattle Ghetto Birds, UW Sundodger: Captain, U-23 USA Mixed Champion
Henry Phan: Seattle Rainmaker, Seattle Ghetto Birds
Tian Yen: UW Sundodger
2015: With Aly, Sam and Geli leaving us, we added:
Charlie Eide (rhymes with “Heidi”): Riot Player. Charlie came into the Riot tryout process as a relative unknown – the girl who brought the fold-out chair to every practice and seemed really excited about Surge’s track workouts (seriously, just so excited). We realized very quickly that Charlie’s excitement and positivity were here to stay. She works hard, smiles hard, and supports her teammates every step of the way. With smooth break throws and dominant defense, Charlie proved to be a shoe-in for the 2014 roster. Now it’s Riot’s turn to be excited because we get to hang out with Charlie all season.
College: Humboldt State
Matt Rehder: Sockeye player. In a flash, boy turned man. Days to months to years, time has bent and warped Matt Rehder. Rumored to travel between galaxies on missions both niche and necessary. Latest credible reports mention his presence near the Crab Nebula. The hydrogen fields are home to all manner of interstellar criminals. We await his next transmission and hope that the mercs don’t find him before he returns home, the price on his head is high.
College: La Verne U. Honors ’10 USAU Junior Worlds Champion
Callie Mah: Riot Player. Callie is one of the most athletic players on Riot. Unfortunately, she has battled injuries since her rookie year, when she tore her ACL on the very first day of practice. These injuries, however, have had a silver lining in that Callie has developed her throws and field vision into those of a player with vastly more experience. Callie’s basketball background has also honed her one-on-one defensive footwork, and she has used those skills effectively at the beginning our season. In 2013, look for Callie to make big plays downfield as well as behind the disc.
